Feedback Focus

Out of all of the three methods reading out loud was by far my favorite. I found that I was able to find more mistakes and make better corrections when I was reading the stories out loud. I was not super fond of the timer method, because it made me feel like I needed to rush through the stories. Rather than concentrating on what was important I couldn't focus on the actual problems throughout the story. I was also not a big fan of the copy-and-delete method because I was concerned that I would delete my comments and miss what I was trying to do.

Reading Notes: Divine Archer

This week I am reading the Divine Archer by F.J. Gould.

  •  To be honest, this reading does not seem any different than our last week’s reading for part B. Although I have enjoyed refreshing my memory of the tales in this section, I am not super happy that we have had to reread the stories. I am aware we had a movie we could watch, but I don’t have quite that much time to designate to the class this week.

  • I may do something with Hanuman because I do enjoy him as a character as well as utilizing some of the Indian culture. I will try to use more of the cultural references throughout the story this week. Having had the chance to reread some of the tales throughout the Ramayana I have been able to pull out a few more details that I will hopefully be able to use in my retelling.

  •  I particularly like the parts of the Ramayana that have the gods and goddesses involved. I can use these perhaps as like a narrator or older figure in the stories, rather than just a mythical being. I like trying to recreate the stories in unique ways that would surprise people. Although, making them recognizable is also an important aspect of these assignments. I am hoping to have a good blend of these aspects in my story this week.

  •   I am going to work on my Author’s note this week in particular to make sure that I am able to explain everything that I am trying to accomplish and get across. I am also wanting to continue to learn more about the Indian culture so that I can do a better job of explaining it in the Author’s note. I think that will be the greatest challenge throughout the semester.

Reading Notes: The Divine Archer

This week I am reading The DivineArcher by F.J. Gould, another version of Ramayana.

  • So far this week's reading has very similar story line as the original version of Ramayana that we read last week. There are a few different details that seem to vary, such as how Rama is marked at birth and the how his mother recognizes that he is a god.
  • I still enjoy the story of how Rama and Sita meet. I think it is a very high school way to meet for such a royal community. I may choose this story to write about from a different perspective this time, perhaps a diary entry from Sita or Rama to show their true feelings and thoughts. I have read several entries that I enjoyed and think it would be fun to use this story.
  • I still think that the story about Rama's exile is a bit confusing, even after reading it twice. It is a very quick change and so the reader is definitely thrown off. This is also not my favorite part of the story because of how forced it seems.
  • Having no real background in Indian culture I am glad to have the chance to read a second version of the Ramayana. Writing about this topic is difficult without any outside knowledge so I am glad to be able to have a second look. When writing about this I always try to give more detailed explanations in the Author’s notes because these are not as common stories for people. This version does a good job (for the most part) to explain all of the things going on. Laura’s notes are also extremely helpful for any questions that I have had in the last few weeks.
  • I think that the end of the first reading assignment ends at a good point knowing the rest of the story. I like the Hanuman and Sugriva stories so I am excited to have more stories with them.
