Reading Notes: Ramayana Public Doman (Cont.)

I am reading Ramayana the public domain version, which is written as an anthology and has many authors. I have really enjoyed reading this so far and am hoping that it continues at such a high level of enjoyment.
  • ·        I like that Bharata has loyalty to his brother Rama and states that he will not take the throne in his brother’s place. I think that this is a good opening for the second part of this reading assignment because Bharata was not around for most of the second half of the first reading.
  • ·        The funeral for Dasharatha was sad, but also interesting because it is the first tradition Indian funeral I have read about. It was nice to see that they hold similar traditions to ours and also have the people attending deliver small gifts into the ‘casket’. I always think that learning about how cultures handle death is fascinating.
  • ·        I have enjoyed how many of the stories have been written in verse. It is really interesting to see how large a part this type of writing played in Indian culture, especially when reminded that this version of the Ramayana is an anthology. I may possibly consider writing my story this week in verse since it seems to be a reoccurring theme throughout.
  • ·        The next few stories all seemed a little randomly strung together, but I liked seeming glimpses of more myths and fables in the Indian culture. It is also cool to be introduced to new mythical creatures and famous characters that I have never heard about until this class.
  • ·        All of the fighting scenes are also a good introduction to that side of Indian culture. It is cool to see how some of the different writers approach describing all of the war scenes and ‘epic’ fights. I always enjoy learning more about this side of mythology as well!

Reading Notes: Ramayana Public Doman Edition

This week I am reading Ramayana, the public domain edition, which is an anthology.

  • I really liked the intro to this story because it clearly tells who the characters are and prepares the readers for the upcoming stories.
  • I also liked the tale about Dasharatha's sacrifice to get his sons. Although the sacrifice of the horse was odd, it could become a good story.
  • I think that the story about Rama killing the female demon could also be a good story to rewrite. It has many good interacting parts and has lots of pieces that could be interesting to play with. I also liked the picture from this story.
  • The story discussing Rama and his fight to win Sita are very well written (and definitely remind me of a fairy tale!). This could be a fun story to make a modern twist on because we have so many Western fairy tales similar to this one. It has all the good elements, the use of weapons (bows) in a contest to prove one's love to a princess! I think that this may be the story I choose to focus on this week.
  • The wedding scene in particular from the story above, is very interesting. I think it would be fun to write about a Prince and Princesses wedding! Especially since there are so many details involved in planning a wedding. I think it was cool that this part was done in verse, which might make retelling it in modern times in verse something to be considered.
I have definitely enjoyed the readings so far for this course and look forward to reading more! I think that the notes are always an important part of being able to write a good story later in the week and am glad to see this is still a part of the course!

Growth Mindset and Me!

Paris was my old spirit animal tumblr

I have always been a perfectionist. Growing up in a house with an engineer and a pharmacist I quickly learned that everything takes time to get perfect, but that it was doable. I didn't like that as much as a quick return though. So learning about Carol Dweck and growth mindset this week was really inspiring. Throughout my college experience I have definitely learned to change how I approach classes. Both studying and taking on the challenges of harder classes has made me a better person, for sure!

Watching the TED talk with Dweck showed a lot of the interesting concepts of the Growth Mindset.  I think it will be fun to further explore this concept and keep working on my own thought process, reaching for my yet! Every time I see a challenge I will be pushing myself further and working on increasing my neuron pathways! Rather than focusing on all the obstacles in my way, I hope to focus on the end goal: Physical Therapy school.

My other personal goal for this semester is to find more joy in the small things. I want to really enjoy this semester, because it is my last spring semester at OU (I graduate next December). So with that I want to find every opportunity to utilize my time and explore the best of OU!

Starting the Semester Off with a Bang

As a senior I am glad to say that I have accumulated many tips to get the semester off on the right foot. This semester however, due to some summer traveling and summer coursework I was unable to complete almost any of them. But usually before any semester I:
  • Purchase new school supplies
    • take advantage of the sales at Walmart, Target, or Office Depot! Even though they may be aiming for younger kids, it's still nice to only pay $1 for a folder or notebook!
  • Print or write out my school schedule
    • this one was not accomplished until the first day of school, but can be a huge time saver! I highly recommend this to anyone who has not been on the OU campus long, or has courses in a new department.
  • Walk my class schedule
    • Since I didn't have time to write it out you can pretty much guess I didn't have time to walk it either... But this can also be a great way to meet people or hang out with friends before classes get going!
  • Email professors about books
    • This is a money saving tip my friends! So usually student will wait until the first day of class to find out if the book is necessary or not (or like me freshman year, go ahead and order them all). But a fast and easy way to find out and possibly save some money is emailing the professors early. This way you know if you need the book and can have more time to find it at the cheapest price!
I hope these help some of you for next semester and that everyone is successful during this one!

Reading Options

I will be reading Ramayana online for Week 2. I am excited to learn more about Indian myth and culture! I have taken Laura's other course on Mythology so I am excited to see how this information differs and is similar. I picked this version simply because it is available online and since I am not living in Norman, making a trip to the library did not seem very feasible. The stories all look interesting so it will be fun to read about a culture I am not very familiar with. The images are all gorgeous as well!

Storybook Favorites

Looking through all of the Storybooks there are lots of great ideas! Having already taken this course it is cool to see how people can take this assignment in so many creative directions. Three storybooks that I found particularly interesting were: Saili's Beauty Parlor, The Ganges River, and Vishnu and Lakshmi. Since I am in the Epics of India course I decided to focus on Storybooks from previous students in the course. I really liked each of these for multiple reasons.

Saili's Beauty Parlor

  • I enjoyed this one right off the bat because of its images and web design. It is decorated like a beauty salon website would be and offers the same aesthetics. I also enjoyed the introduction because she discusses several traditions within the Indian beauty world! The pictures on each story were very effective for focusing the reader on the stories as well. It was also very well written throughout.
The Ganges River
  • This Storybook had lots of gorgeous pictures of the river itself, which definitely entices the readers to stay! The story within all of this was very intriguing as well and is what drew me in to the actual project. The author did a good job of keeping the readers interested as well as conveying the myths/stories they were pulling from, which I know can be quite challenging.
Vishnu and Lakshmi
  • I enjoyed this Storybook because it introduced a lot of characters that I did not previously know about. They did a pretty good job with the web design as well. The stories were well written and make me want to learn more about Indian culture and Hindu concepts. I will definitely be on the look out for stories about these two in the future!

Introduction to a Future Physical Therapist

Hi guys! My name is Kaitlin Lutz and I am in the Epics of India class this semester. I thought writing a blog would be fun and a great way to get my last humanities credit out of the way. I am a Health and Exercise Science major and love what I study! Learning more about the human body and how it works is something that I have always enjoyed, and what has pushed me to choose physical therapy as my career choice.

Some fun facts about me are:
  • I've been to Germany three times, and stayed this summer for a month! I love Germany and have family that we visit as often as we can. I love to travel as a whole so while in Germany I visited Austria and France as well. I have a travel board in my room that lists all the places I hope to go and my ultimate dream before I die is to travel to each continent at least once!
My dad, boyfriend, aunt, and I at my favorite bakery in Kaiserslautern, DE (personal photo)
  • I am from Mustang, Oklahoma but I attended Bishop McGuinness High School.
Bailey (top) and Scooter (bottom) my dogs! (personal photo)
  • I have two dogs, an Aussie mix and an Anatolian Shepherd. They are both 9 years old and are still loving life! Scooter, the Aussie, was found in the streets when he was a puppy and Bailey, the shepherd, was adopted from Pets and People in Yukon after we had found Scooter. They are both tug-of-war and Frisbee aficionados!
  • I love to craft! I knit scarfs and am currently working on mastering knitting hats (which have proven to be difficult because they are a circular pattern instead of linear). I paint canvases for a lot of people for gifts. I think that homemade gifts are special and always love making something personal for the people in my life. Especially my boyfriend! We both love comics, anime, and movies so I have yet to run out of topics to paint for him!
  • I am a member of Alpha Omicron Pi and love being in a sorority. Although I am not the 'stereotypical' sorority girl, I have loved participating fully in sorority life! I have gained many friendships and lifelong skills!
My family line at the zoo! (personal photo)
  • My favorite T.V. shows include: Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Gilmore Girls, and Parks and Recreation (as well as many others)
  • My favorite Movies include: Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Proposal, and My Fair Lady
  • My favorite Books include: Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter,  The Giver, and Dragonriders of Pern
My big dreams are to go to Physical Therapy school at Emory University or University of Delaware and then finish with a residency in Portland, Oregon for pediatric physical therapy. I want to mostly work with performance artists, specifically dancers. I currently shadow at the OKC Ballet and that has been an amazing experience! I danced ballet for 16 years and try to take classes still when I have the time! This year I am also working as physical therapy tech at PT Central and am very excited about this opportunity!

My new goal for this year is to be a healthier person. My degree naturally inspires people to become active and to eat healthy. I love to cook (and bake) all kinds of foods. My boyfriend and I are aiming to home cook all of our meals this semester with just a few date nights out! I am also starting to run more and take more dance classes (yay!).

As a whole I am looking forward to this semester and learning new things!

Week 1 Story: The Queen of Hearts and Her Tarts

Cherry Tarts For Your Heart

April had never intended on winning Prom Queen, but it had happened. Having the football quarterback as your boyfriend helped your chances though. She remembered the dark red dress she had been wearing and the signs her friends had made, stating that they wanted “The Queen of Harts” to win. April hadn’t been a big fan of it but Roy had loved it. He thought it was a clever use of her last name, not recognizing the infamy that came with the title. The signs had been plastered all over the senior hallway and the cafeteria, covered with pictures of the happy couple.

“April, sweetie! Your tarts are ready!” April loved her mom, but she had become very distracted with work ever since her parents had divorced, “Oh and I forgot to tell you, Roy is heading over soon to talk to you!”

This made April panic a little inside. They hadn’t seen each other in over two weeks, with sparse texts in that time. Instead, April had been spending her time with an old friend, Nate. He had been out of town since January studying abroad. He was home schooled and his parents loved to travel so this was the third time Nate had been gone for several months ‘studying abroad’. This time they had gone to Japan, where Nate's fathers' family immigrated from. She remembered getting the text that they were back in town.

“Hey April!” Nate was always bursting with enthusiasm, “We’re back from Japan! We should totally hang out sometime because… I’m back from Japan! And bonus! I have gifts for you! Let me know when you’re out of school so we can hang!”

This was during her last week of school. Roy didn’t know about Nate. They had been dating since the end of January and Nate had been in Japan. But when Roy found out… April had never seen him get so mad before. She had told him that Nate was her best friend since they were kids, but that hadn’t helped. He demanded she cut off contact with him, which is when the fighting started. To fill her time April had been baking and made plans to hang out with Nate.

The tarts! April rushed to the kitchen and quickly pulled out the cherry tarts, Nate’s favorite. She had made them because he was coming over later that day as well. She would have to text Nate about Roy and try to reschedule.

“Hey Nate! So… Roy is coming by later and I don’t think you both being here would be a great idea right now. The cherry tarts are ready so I’ll let you know if you can swing by for those this evening or something.  Sorry!”

As she was searching for the perfect emoji to show how sorry she was, she heard the doorbell ring.
“Crap, that must be Roy,” April left the tarts on the kitchen table by their back door to cool.  She then went to the front door to let Roy in.

“Hey April, can I come in?” Roy looked nervous at the door.

“Sure, what did you wanna talk about?” April wasn’t sure what to expect from this conversation. They walked into the living room and they sat down on the couch.

“Well, I just wanted to let you know that I was sorry and that I want to work things out if you’re willing to forgive me? I made a big mistake yelling at you about Nate, so I’m sorry.” Roy was still looking at everything but April’s face.

“It’s okay, is that all? I’m baking and don’t want anything to burn.” April wanted Roy gone, she liked him but this was way out of character for Roy.

“Oh, uh, yeah. I just felt like I should say that in person.” Roy finally looked April in the eyes, “I guess I’ll head out then.”

“Okay, thanks for the apology. We can try and hang out sometime next week? Maybe see a movie or something?” April was glad Roy was heading out the door because she realized she had forgotten to send the text to Nate and was hoping he wasn’t already here.

“Yeah, sure. That’d be nice,” They both started walking towards the front door when April saw it. Nate was peeking through the back door at the tarts. Well he had caught Roy’s eye too, “Hey wait, whose that guy? Were you having a guy over that I didn’t know about? What’s going on April? Is this why you’re trying to shove me out the door?”

April had to suppress an eye roll and let Nate in.

“No Roy, this is Nate. He was coming over today but I meant to tell him to hold off since you were coming over. I forgot to send him the text though. He was just coming over to catch up. And I thought you were just apologizing for yelling about Nate?” April was walking to the front door, hoping Roy would take the hint and leave.

“Well yeah, but if you’re hanging out with him behind my back that’s a bit different,” Roy turned to face Nate who was starting in on the cherry tarts on the kitchen table, “You need to back off my lady and stop taking tarts that you don’t deserve.” Roy crossed his arms, waiting for a response.

“Mph-sorry-crshmph-I didn’t-mphsh-mean to cause trouble,” Nate was trying to finish eating the tart he had picked up, “I promise, I won’t take anymore tarts or bother April. We just wanted to catch up; we’re friends, that’s all.”

“Nate you don’t need to apologize, Roy does.  Or he can leave.” April was mad, “And Roy I am not ‘your lady’ so don’t think you can treat me like your property. I take back what I said, you need to leave” April grabbed Roy’s arm and took him to the front door.

Once Roy left, April apologized to Nate and they sat and ate tarts until they were satisfied.

Author's Note:

I liked this assignment because we got to test out our creativity. This week I chose to write about The Queen of Hearts and Her Tarts. The story was from The Nursery Rhyme Book:

 The Queen of Hearts,
She made some tarts,
All on a summer's day;
The Knave of Hearts,
He stole those tarts,
And took them clean away.

The King of Hearts
Called for the tarts,
And beat the Knave full sore;
The Knave of Hearts
Brought back the tarts,
And vowed he'd steal no more.

I liked to re-imagine the story in current times with a girl who happens to have the last name Hart and her struggles with the King (Roy) and the Knave (Nate) and that perhaps the King doesn't always win.

Comment Wall

I'm super excited for this semester! Please feel free to leave comments on anything you find on my blog!

My Favorite Place

There are so many beautiful places in the world and the cork board on my wall only confirms that I want to travel to see as many as possible. However, to date my favorite place that I have been to would be Germany. I know what you're thinking, 'But Kaitlin, that's a whole country!'. But I promise you, if you have ever had the chance to travel to Germany you will find it very difficult to pick just one city or place that is best. However, I have tried to narrow it down to three places in particular.

The first place is Cologne, which has unfortunately been in the headlines a lot lately. This beautiful city has the perfect combination of urban shopping and restaurants mixed with the history and tradition that comes with being 2,000 years old. I have traveled to Cologne twice and each time have visited the Cologne Dome, a beautiful cathedral.

Cologne also happens to house the Lindt Chocolate factory, which produces beautiful chocolates! One of the neat things when touring the factory is being able to see the different molds they use for their chocolates and the production equipment necessary to produce all of the chocolate!

The second place I absolutely love in Germany is Heidelberg. The city has some of the kindest people and bakeries everywhere you turn. It also houses the University of Heidelberg where one of my cousins studied Journalism. We have family that lives in Otterbach, Germany and visiting them is a bonus of traveling through Germany. My favorite aspect of Heidelberg in particular though, would have to be the castle that sits in the middle of the city, which gives a spectacular view!

The last of my favorite places in Germany is Munich. This vibrant, cultural hub is what many think of when they hear Germany. It has beautiful architecture all along its streets and several shops selling traditional lederhosens and dirndls for people to buy. The cafes lining the streets are great places to take a break from all the shopping. But that's not all! Munich also houses the wonderful football (or soccer) team F.C. Bayern Munchen. While in Munich one can also visit the Olympic Stadium from the 1972 Olympics. With so much to do it is easy to see why this is a great city to visit!

I love visiting Germany and my family that lives in Germany. I am very fortunate and have gotten to do so twice in my life and traveled there for the third time this summer. This year we went to Munich and Salzburg! The German culture is wonderful, as are the people, so if you ever have the chance I would most certainly recommend traveling through Germany!
